braking system
Braking system:
A braking system ensures that the vehicle slows down and stops while in motion. Works in the best conditions. All you need to know about it.
braking system components
The braking system consists of several interlocking parts. Depending on the model of the vehicle, it can be drum, disc, etc. A disc brake system consists of:
Master cylinder, an essential element of the brake whose function is to distribute the hydraulic pressure through the 4 cylinders.
Brake fluid whose role is to keep the system in good condition. It is advisable to change it regularly to avoid leaks.
Hoses connecting the pipes to the calipers, the latter having the function of housing the brake pads.
ABS, present on many disc brakes, has the function of preventing the wheels from locking.
The drum brake system, on the other hand, is placed inside the wheel and consists of wheel cylinders, brake shoes and shoes. The cylinder and the segment move apart when braking in order to bring the shoes together inside the drum. However, it should be noted that this brake system is not recommended on the front wheels, exerting little pressure compared to disc brakes. If there is a problem, you will identify the type of brake you need.
operation of the braking system
The braking system is an essential part of the car, in the sense that it regulates the speed of the machine. To slow it down or stop it, just apply enough pressure on the brake pedal. To guarantee optimum efficiency, the braking power must be 7.5 times greater than the speed of the car. Braking works thanks to the brake fluid and the hydraulic system transmitted to the 4 brake cylinders. In other words, all the elements of the brake are interconnected. The brake pedal is connected to the master cylinder, which, as mentioned earlier, has the function of converting the force exerted on the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure. Thanks to the presence of brake fluid, the master cylinder is then able to distribute the hydraulic pressure in the wheels in order to initiate the braking process.
The main malfunctions of the brake system
Leaks are the main problems of the brake system. They are recognized by a pedal that reaches the ground or by a warning light on the dashboard. As they can damage the entire system, leaks should be checked quickly. Brake pad wear is also a common problem. It results from repeated use of the brakes. Worn pads are indicated by a metallic noise, knowing that there is friction at the level of the disc. In addition, in case of worn brake discs, the car may stop in an unusual way. They can actually deform when in contact with heat, leading to poor brake pad pressure.
When to change the brakes?
Being safety equipment, the brakes should be checked regularly. The replacement frequency depends on the use of the vehicle, knowing that new pads are to be installed approximately every 40,000 km. The signs mentioned above, however, are indicators that the pads need to be replaced. A change of brake disc is to be expected when it shows 15% wear. However, if the disc cracks or warps, replace it immediately.
